Beats: The Devin Townsend Project - Epicloud review

To many people, Devin Townsend is regarded as the king of progressive metal music and I can't disagree with them. He has been making progressive metal both as solo projects like this one and with bands like Strapping Young Lad for almost two decades. Whenever Devin's name is credited to an album the immediate thought for fans is "What is this crazy bastard gonna do next?"

The album opens with what is possibly the best intro I have ever heard, Effervescent. 43 seconds of an epic, acapella chorus that merges seamlessly into the second track True North which features a female vocalist. It just continues the catchy magic that is Epicloud. Going into Lucky Animals, the pace picks up and it just gets heavier. I have found myself singing the insanely catchy and repetitive chorus on multiple occasions. Next up is Liberation which, believe it or not gets even faster and heavier and, I'd say more Devin-esque. Again, it has lyrics that just make you want to sing all of the time! We get a bit slower with Where We Belong and atmospheric here but it's nothing to be sniffed at. There is heaviness in this song yet it still keeps you quite mesmerised and deeply involved in what's going on.

The rest of the album continues to fluctuate between the magical and melodic, and then fast, heavy and downright weird.

Ever since I got this album, I haven’t been able to stop listening to it. It’s perfect from start to finish and indeed, it finishes on the same note it started with on Effervescent. A truly wonderful example of how to do progressive metal!

If you like Devin Townsend and like progressive metal I’m sure I don’t need to tell you this but... BUY IT. GO NOW. If you’re unfamiliar with Devin Townsend, check out the Epicloud teaser below...
