Booze: Discworld Ales review

“Absolutely NOT brewed by necromancy, no way, no siree”

“The Boathouse Brewery came into existence following an explosion deep within the cellars beneath the courtyard, which would have been blamed on overly exuberant students had the remains of an experimental brewery not been found during the clean-up.

Archchancellor Ridcully (a former student brewer himself) was left with no choice but to discourage the practice and so reluctantly issued a decree banning all brewing activities within the boundaries of UU.

Weeks of careful examination of the Unseen University statutes and bylaws (championed by Ridcully himself) eventually lead to the discovery of a loophole. It turned out that the little-used boathouse, being constructed mainly over the river Ankh and therefore not technically within the grounds, was exempt from the decree and so the Boathouse Brewery was born. A large red line painted on the floor now formally marks the junction of river and university grounds.”

Reads the website.

These beers were all brewed at Brentwood Brewery in Essex and are based on the Discworld novels by Terry Pratchett that I’m sure we’re all familiar with.

I reviewed these with my buddy Jay who bought them.

Modos midden
Style: Golden Ale
ABV: 4.5%

Look:
Very cloudy orange

Aroma:
Cedar wood. Tangerines. Generic cider. Like an orange cider. Freshly whipped cream.

Taste:
Tangerines and cream with bitterness.

Mouthfeel:
Mouthfeel very dry.

Conclusion:
Wouldn't buy again.

Bugarup blonde
Style: IPA (Fourecks IPA)
ABV: 4%

Look:
Very yellow.

Aroma:
Very floral then grapefruit and caramel.

Taste:
Apricots and melons then grapefruit bitterness.

Mouthfeel:
Quite dry and prickly

Conclusion:
We really liked it. Not sure about IPA but its certainly a good American pale ale.

Bledlows silence
Style: IPA
ABV: 4.4%

Look:
The colour of cloudy morning piss after a drunken night.

Aroma:
Cappuccino chocolates with a burnt toffee coating

Taste:
Dry roasted coffee and some tobacco

Conclusion:
Basically its nicely drinkable but the tasting notes are nothing like the beer. It’s like back in pub smoking days. Not an IPA.

Hixs darkside
Style: Oatmeal Stout
ABV: 7%

Look:
Black with a ruby tinge.

Aroma:
Red berries. Cranberry and blackcurrant like summer fruit cordial. Not coffee and roasty like expected.

Taste:
Not what we expect f4om a stout. Summer fruit cordial with a late coffee dry roastiness.

Mouthfeel:
Dry. Very dry. But heavy carbonationat the same time.

Conclusion:
Very nice but not at all what we expected.

Final Conclusion

In order of favour

1)      Hixs darkside
2)      Bledlows slience
3)      Bugarup blonde
4)      Modos midden

All in all, we really were not impressed and would not buy them again.

Thanks to Jay for hosting this at his house and for the beers, the next one is on me and you’re in for a treat!

  1. 'The colour of cloudy morning piss after a drunken night'

You seem to have come to the same conclusion as most reviews I've read about these beers.

I find the books predictable so it's nice to know the beers are too!

    1. Haha that was Jay's quote and you can't disagree!

I wanted them to be good, more than just a gimmick with cool labels.
